Snap’s Spectacles vs Meta’s Orion

Snap’s Spectacles are aimed at entertainment and developers. They offer new features such as gesture control and AR effects. However, the glasses are currently only available for developers and the demos still need fine-tuning. The form factor is a little clunkier, but the possibilities for creative AR applications are promising.

Meta, on the other hand, is setting the course for the future with the Orion prototype. Mark Zuckerberg promises a world in which we interact with holographic displays via a neural interface. Although the technology is impressive, it is currently still difficult to access and expensive – a real nerd toy.

What do the tests say?

Snap’s glasses are fun, but are still a long way from being a product suitable for the masses. Although its expertise in the AR sector is praised, its design and price are clear weaknesses. Meta’s Orion, on the other hand, is technologically on a different level, but does not yet offer any added value for everyday life. Snap focuses on entertainment, Meta on high-tech and visions of the future. Both glasses have strengths and weaknesses, but it remains to be seen which will prevail.

Why is Zuckerburg investing billions in VR?

Mark Zuckerberg has invested billions in virtual and augmented reality in recent years. With this bold move, the Meta founder is aiming to reduce his company’s dependence on tech giants such as Apple. The development of its own devices such as the VR glasses “Quest” and the AR prototype “Orion” shows that Meta is determined to actively shape the future of technology.
